Mac App Store
Steve Jobs announced the forthcoming Mac Appstore today. The paradigm will be the same as the well known Appstores on iOS devices: one click shopping, immediate installation and notifications on available updates.
From a users point of view I like the idea of the Mac Appstore because it may become the go to point when I´m in need for an application for a certain task. It spares me the hassle of wading through a huge amount of search results on google, bing or whatever I use for web search and reviews and direct comparison of different apps are an added bonus.
From a developers point of view it´s an additional POS which comes with a lot of exposure and will be preinstalled on every machine the app was developed for. Apple obviously gets a share of the revenue just as every reseller does.
With regard to developers and users this seems to be a win/win situation. In this case it even has a third winner. Apple. They will get a 30% share of whatever is sold through the Mac Appstore thereby opening another source of revenue for the company.
As long as it does’t become the only source for Mac Applications I have no objection against a Mac App store. To the contrary it´ll be a welcome place where the vast amount of apps that is out there will hopefully be brought together and presented in a pleasant and manageable way. I´m sure a “no Porn” rule will be apply but hey it´s not like they are taking away the internet only because they open a software store.
